Muay Thai history
Muay thai was developed as part of the country’s self-defense in the 15th century when Thailand was at war with Burma. A boxer named Nai Kanom Tom is said to have first brought Thailand’s art of self defense to the attention of the people after he was given a chance to regain his freedom on condition that he defeats a dozen Burmese fighters in unarmed combat. From then on, it became popular nationwide.
Today, Muay Thai bouts are staged all over the country at venues that range from crude boxing rings hurriedly set up during village fairs to modern air-conditioned stadiums that meet international standards.
As the boxers enter the ring, they perform a special pre-fight dance know as the”ram muay” while wearing a headband given to them by their trainer.
It is considered a sacred talisman earned after dedicating several years of one’s life to knowing the proper fighting stance and techniques. The dance starts with the “wai kru”. Where the pugilists kneel and bow three times as a show of respect to their teachers. Then, the fighting starts.
Each bout is accompanied by music whose tone rises and falls as the boxers do battle with one another. There are five rounds lasting three minutes each, and it often ends when one is counted out by the referee after a knockdown. The referee can also.
Stop a fight when he deems that a boxer can no longer defend himself.
A boxer can be disqualified when the referee considers him as not showing enough enthusiasm. Since betting is encouraged, the referee has the obligation to ensure that all contestants give their best.
Thai boxing matches are held every Monday, Thursday and Friday night at the Boxing Stadium Patong and Phuket town. Please see the detail below. |
